Giveaway #41 Winner Profile:

Tony M. and the 1998 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado

Tony was walking through Home Depot with both hands full when his phone started ringing. At first, the St. Joseph, Michigan, resident ignored it. Then it rang again. “Somebody better be dead,” he joked later while recalling the moment he answered the call.

Instead, the voice on the other end belonged to 717 Supply Founder Mike Hyssong, who was calling with news Tony immediately struggled to process. “Well, Tony, I'm calling to tell you, buddy,” Hyssong said during the call. “You won the 1998 Black OBS.” “No way,” Tony replied almost instantly. “No freaking way.”

The truck in question was a 1998 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado, an OBS (Original Body Style) pickup, which stood out as a giveaway for Tony long before his name was drawn. Unlike some entrants chasing newer supercars or high-horsepower builds, Tony had a personal connection to the older Chevy platform. “That was my first truck,” he explained during the winner call. “I think I bought that 95 when I was like 19.”

That connection became even more obvious once he arrived at 717 Supply headquarters to see the truck in person. During the delivery, Tony pulled out an old photograph of himself standing beside the OBS Chevy he owned decades earlier. The resemblance between the two trucks surprised everyone in the room.

“That's identical,” Hyssong said after seeing the picture. Tony's original had been a stepside, but the similarities in color, body style, and overall appearance immediately brought back memories of his early twenties. “It was meant to be,” he said.

Like many longtime 717 Supply followers, Tony had entered giveaways without seriously expecting to win. He mentioned buying shirts, knives, entry packs, and merchandise tied to previous Corvette, Mustang, and truck giveaways while following the channel online.

“I've entered for every one,” he said during the interview. “I have stacks of t-shirts.” At one point, he even found himself defending the company to skeptical friends who questioned whether the giveaways were legitimate. “I've been watching this guy for like years,” Tony explained. “You figure if you’re scamming somebody, he would’ve been in jail or off YouTube.”

The truck itself also exceeded expectations once Tony finally got behind the wheel. Despite being nearly 30 years old, the truck showed only about 60,000 miles. It kept many factory details that often disappear over time, including both original keys, power seats, and an unusually clean interior.

Tony immediately started talking about plans for the truck, including a possible lift kit, plus wheels and tires inspired by other OBS builds he’d seen online. At the same time, he admitted part of him simply wanted to enjoy driving something that reminded him so strongly of his younger years.

Unlike some giveaway winners who arrange transport, Tony never hesitated about how he planned to get the truck home. “No, I'm driving it,” he said. “I don't care.” The trip back to Michigan would take roughly nine hours, giving him plenty of time to settle into the same body style he remembered owning decades earlier—except this time, he’d won it.

About the 1998 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado

Tony took home a black 1998 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado OBS with about 60,000 miles. While many trucks from this generation end up heavily modified or restored, this one stayed close to factory condition. 717 Supply considered adding a lift kit before deciding to leave the truck mostly untouched, given how clean and original it already was.

According to Mike Hyssong, he originally considered lifting the truck before deciding against it because of its condition. Instead, the team limited the work to paint correction and minor paintless dent repair, keeping the Silverado similar to how it would have appeared in the late 1990s.

The truck also carried several details that stood out to OBS enthusiasts. It featured the extended-cab layout with the generation’s unusual three-door setup, where only the passenger side received a rear-opening access door. Inside, the Silverado retained rare upgraded carpeting that stretched across the front floor area, along with factory power seats and both original keys.

Chevrolet equipped the truck with its Vortec V8 engine, part of the later GMT400-era updates that replaced the older throttle-body injection setup used in earlier OBS trucks. While looking over the engine bay during the reveal, Hyssong and Tony talked about how much cleaner and smoother the newer Vortec arrangement felt compared to the older systems. “It feels brand new to drive,” Hyssong said.

The original window sticker also remained with the truck, showing an MSRP of more than $29,000 in 1998—equivalent to roughly twice that amount today when adjusted for inflation. Combined with the truck’s low mileage and clean condition, the Silverado represents the kind of preserved OBS Chevy that has become harder to find as values continue to climb.
